Spider Vein Treatment

Sclerotherapy is a treatment that has been used for many years to reduce the unsightly appearance of spider veins. Sclerotherapy is still considered the ‘gold standard’ of spider vein treatment. Sclerotherapy is not a treatment for varicose veins.

This vein treatment involves injecting a small amount of a sodium and lidocaine treatment directly into the spider veins using a very small needle. Gradually, the blood vessel shrinks and blood flow through the vessel is minimized.

Following the procedure, we recommend compression panty hose be worn during the daytime for 1-2 weeks after sclerotherapy vein treatment. This is a key part of recovery to ensure the best outcome from leg vein treatment.

It is likely that additional spider veins will continue developing gradually in other areas over the years and additional treatments may be recommended for spider veins. Sclerotherapy is not recommended in those patients taking blood-thinning medicine or in those with a history of blood clots, or for nursing or pregnant women. The preferred vein treatment time is fall, winter or spring as we recommend minimal to no sun exposure for at least two weeks following sclerotherapy vein treatment.

Sclerotherapy is a terrific way to reduce the appearance of those annoying, unsightly spider veins so many of us has.
