How Much Downtime Should You Expect After Facial Plastic Surgery?

Published October 8, 2026

Omni Blog — 10 Questions You ABSOLUTELY Must Ask Your Plastic Surgeon Before Considering a Rhinoplasty

If you’re considering facial plastic surgery, it’s natural to spend a lot of time thinking about your results. But there’s another question that matters just as much when planning surgery: How long will it take before you feel comfortable returning to work, seeing friends, exercising, and getting back to your usual routine?

The answer depends on the procedure, your individual healing process, and the extent of your surgery. “Downtime” can also mean different things to different people. You may feel well enough to work from home before you feel ready for an in-person meeting or dinner out, for example.

At Omni Cosmetic, we want patients to have a realistic understanding of recovery before deciding on facial plastic surgery. Knowing what to expect makes it easier to plan ahead, arrange support, and give yourself the time your body needs to heal.

What Does Downtime After Facial Plastic Surgery Really Mean?

Recovery is a gradual process, rather than a single date on the calendar when you are suddenly “healed.”

In the early days after facial surgery, swelling, bruising, tenderness, or a feeling of tightness may be expected. Depending on your procedure, you may also have dressings, a splint, or other postoperative considerations.

As healing progresses, you may feel ready to resume certain everyday activities even though some swelling is still present. Your final results generally take longer to develop as the tissues continue to settle and heal.

This distinction is important when planning your schedule. The amount of time you need away from work may be very different from the amount of time it takes for residual swelling to resolve.

How Long Is Facelift Recovery?

Facelift recovery varies based on the surgical approach and whether your facelift is combined with another procedure.

At Omni Cosmetic, facelift surgery may involve a deep plane technique, which repositions deeper facial tissues to address concerns such as sagging cheeks, jowls, and deeper facial folds. Because the technique works within the natural facial layers, patients may experience a smoother recovery than they expect from a comprehensive facial rejuvenation procedure.

Most patients considering a deep plane facelift should think in terms of weeks, rather than days, when planning their social downtime. Many people feel comfortable resuming social activities within approximately two to three weeks, although healing continues for several months.

If your facelift is combined with another procedure, such as eyelid surgery, a brow lift, fat grafting, or laser skin resurfacing, your recovery plan may look different.

How Long Is Rhinoplasty Recovery?

For many rhinoplasty patients, the first week is the most noticeable part of recovery.

At Omni Cosmetic, patients typically wear a nasal splint during the first week to help manage swelling and bruising. Interestingly, many patients find that nasal stuffiness is a bigger inconvenience than pain during this stage.

Some patients return to work within 48 hours, while others prefer to take the full week to recover. The right choice often depends on how you feel, what your job requires, and how comfortable you are being seen while early swelling or bruising is present.

Rhinoplasty is also a good example of why “downtime” and “complete healing” are not interchangeable. You can return to your routine long before your nose has reached its final appearance. Swelling may continue to resolve for many months, and some residual swelling can take up to a full year to fully resolve, with the most noticeable changes generally visible within the first three months.

How Long Is Blepharoplasty Recovery?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can address concerns such as excess eyelid skin, puffiness, and under-eye bags. Because the eye area is so visible, bruising and swelling can influence how quickly patients feel comfortable returning to social activities.

At Omni Cosmetic, we generally recommend planning for approximately two weeks of downtime after blepharoplasty to allow bruising and swelling to subside.

Your surgeon will provide specific postoperative instructions based on your procedure. Following those instructions carefully is an important part of supporting a comfortable, healthy recovery.

What About Brow Lift Recovery?

A brow lift can reposition a drooping brow and address forehead lines and heaviness around the upper face. It is also frequently considered alongside eyelid surgery when rejuvenating the eye and brow area.

Recovery will depend in part on the surgical technique your surgeon recommends. Omni Cosmetic offers different approaches to brow lift surgery based on a patient’s anatomy, hairline, goals, and other individual considerations.

Because brow lift and eyelid surgery are sometimes performed together, it is especially important to discuss your overall recovery timeline during your consultation rather than estimating downtime for each procedure separately.

Combined Procedures Can Change Your Recovery Timeline

Facial aging rarely occurs in just one isolated area, so some patients benefit from combining procedures.

A deep plane facelift, for example, may be paired with blepharoplasty, a brow lift, fat grafting, or laser skin resurfacing when appropriate. Combining procedures can provide more comprehensive rejuvenation, but it also means your recovery should be planned around your complete surgical plan.

Your surgeon can explain which changes are likely to improve naturally through one procedure and where an additional treatment may be helpful. From there, we can give you a clearer idea of what your particular recovery is likely to involve.

Planning Ahead Can Make Recovery Easier

One of the most helpful things you can do is give yourself enough room in your schedule to recover without feeling rushed.

Before surgery, think about work commitments, childcare, transportation, household responsibilities, exercise, travel, and upcoming social events. Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and follow your surgical team’s recommendations about having support available during the early recovery period.

Most importantly, follow the postoperative instructions provided by your surgeon. Your recovery plan is based on your procedure and your health, so individualized guidance from your surgical team should always take priority over a general timeline you find online.

At Omni Cosmetic, postoperative care is an ongoing part of the surgical experience. Our team cares for patients from preoperative education through surgery and recovery, with follow-up visits that allow us to monitor healing and answer questions along the way.

Give Yourself Time to Heal

It’s understandable to want to know exactly when you’ll be back to normal after facial plastic surgery. In reality, recovery is personal. Two patients undergoing the same procedure may feel ready to return to their routines at different points.

During your consultation at Omni Cosmetic, we’ll talk with you about your goals, the procedure or combination of procedures that may be appropriate, and what you can realistically expect from recovery. We want you to feel informed about the entire experience, including the time between surgery day and enjoying your results.
